Austenitic stainless steel fasteners such as grade 904l produced under specification ASTM A193 are designed to withstand either high temperature or high pressure applications. Since the chemistry requirements for the ASTM A193 UNS N08904 Bolts Nuts are detailed in this specification, the use of any nonspecified element in its alloy is strictly prohibited.

Grade 904l is a non-stabilized, non-magnetic stainless steel alloy. This grade is also classified as a highly alloyed stainless steel. In comparison to grade 316, the addition of copper in its alloy is what improves the resistance of 904l Stainless Steel Fasteners to strong reducing acids, like sulphuric acid. The exposure of any steel to sulfuric acid is detrimental to their alloy, as they easily become susceptible to decay. Properties such as stress related corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion are also common features of the DIN 1.4539 Threaded Rod, due to the presence of a higher quantity of nickel in its chemical composition.

The chemistry of this alloy also ensures resistance against decay from reducing agents in both aggressive as well as mild environments. To optimize resistance to stress related corrosion cracking in critical environments, the SS 904L Studs are often solution treated after being processed by cold working.
