Grade 316L Stainless Steel Fasteners are a low carbon version of alloy 316. Generally, those alloys which have a low carbon controlled chemistry such as stainless steel 316l bolts and nuts are considered to be structurally weaker.
However, the addition of nitrogen to the alloy of Stainless Steel 316l Nuts is what brings up the yield strength of the metal to that of grade 316. Due to the inclusion of nitrogen in 316l Stainless Steel hex head screws, these fasteners have a much higher resistance to pitting, especially when compared to popular alloy grade 304. Regarded as a marine grade alloy, the SS UNS S31603 Fasteners are useful to combat corrosion in polluted marine atmospheres.

Therefore, these SS DIN 1.4404 Fasteners are often used in an as-welded condition.
