The primary reason for the development of carpenter 20 was for resistance to acidic solutions. In particular, austenitic stainless steels have a troubled history with acids like sulfuric acid, as they easily corrode these alloys. Unlike grade 304, or even stainless steel 316, Alloy 20 Stainless Steel Bolts exhibit superior resilience against sulfuric acid across several concentrations.

The higher contents of nickel and chromium aid in the corrosion resistance properties of the alloy. Along with these base elements, manufacturers of the WERKSTOFF NR. 2.4660 Studs include substantial amounts of copper and molybdenum which also improves its resistance to both pitting and chlorine solutions. These two properties are at an elevated level when the UNS N08020 Threaded Rod is compared to grade 304 stainless steel. Yet, in comparison to grade 316, carpenter 20 has been known to demonstrate properties to a similar degree.

In addition to excellent mechanical properties and fabricability, the Carpenter 20 Nuts are subject to minimal carbide precipitation during operations like welding, due to a lowered content of carbon and inclusion of niobium, as a stabilizing element in its alloy. Regarded as a superalloy by manufacturers and suppliers, the Alloy 20 Fasteners has excellent resistance to general corrosion and crevice corrosion, especially in environments that may contain chemicals like chlorides and sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and nitric acid.
