Alloy 48 or Nilo 48 is what is known as a nickel-iron controlled expansion alloy. As the name suggests, the percentage of nickel present in Nilo Alloy 48 Round Bars stands at about 48%. The Coefficient of thermal expansion for this alloy is such that it matches both soft lead as well as soda-lime glasses. Controlled expansion alloys such as the Nilo Alloy 48 Hex Bars are alloys which can exhibit a low expansion coefficient.

The coefficient of thermal expansion varies at both low and high temperature settings. This nickel iron nonbinary Nilo Alloy 48 Cold Finished Bars also demonstrates properties such as good ductility, a high inflection point in addition to good toughness. For instance, the alloy is a part of Industrial thermostats. Generally, these thermostats are used in applications that have an operational temperature which can rise up to 450°C. Trade names for UNS K94800 Rod include Invar 48 and Magnifer 50. A specification which caters to nickel-iron alloys like Alloy 48 is ASTM F30. The ASTM F30 Nilo 48 Bright Bar is required to adhere to certain parameters including its grain size, surface finish, chemistry,  temper, as well as thermal expansion requirements.
