1140 Steel Round Bar

SAE 1140 rods

AISI 1140 carbon steel rod
Grade 1140 is a carbon steel alloy whose chemistry contains manganese along with trace contents of both sulfur and phosphorus. A reason why both manufacturers and suppliers discourage welding the Aisi 1140 Carbon Steel Rod is due to the presence of sulfur in its alloy. Sulfur, in this carbon steel, causes gas porosity, on the weld once the steel has been subjected to welding. Aside from causing the failure, welding may hinder the other properties of the alloy, rendering the steel damaged.
Similarly, before hot working or subjecting the 1140 Steel Round Bar to any heat treatment, one must consult the manufacturer to avoid undue loss of properties, on account of this alloy being sulfur containing steel. The machinability of this steel is considered to be fairly good. In fact, the machinability of 1140 Alloy Steel is about 70% that of grade 1112. The content of sulfur in the alloy of the 1140 Round Bar is what makes machining this alloy relatively simpler.
Hence, this high strength material is used for free machining operations. Its high content of carbon and manganese results in the carbon steel Sae 1140 Rods exhibiting higher tensile strength properties. Which is why they are commonly noticed in the automotive industry, as the combination of manganese and carbon improve the mechanical strength of the 1140 Steel Bar.
