Like most carbon steels, the content of carbon in the alloy of grade 1141 is moderate. With moderate strength properties, the 1141 Steel Round Bar is referred to as a standard resulfurized steel. Generally, steels that have the number 11 in their grade are indicative of being resulfurized steel. Essentially the first number 1 informs the buyer that the 1141 Round Bar is of a carbon steel variety and the second number 1 means sulfur has been added to its alloy.

Being medium carbon steel, the alloy has some amounts of manganese as well. Resulfuriszed steel grades such as 1141 Steel Bar are often referred to as Free machining steel. The production of Free machining steel involves smaller chips while the alloy is machining. Using smaller chips is beneficial as it increases the machinability of the material used to produce grade 1141 Cold Drawn Steel Bar. To simplify, the use of smaller chips discourages entanglement in the machinery during the machining process, while also improving the rate at which the material gets machined.

The cost of producing Free machining steel grades like SAE 1141 Round Bars, is about 15% to 20% higher in comparison to conventional steels. Yet, the higher cost of producing these steel components has been offset by the added advantages like increased machining speeds, larger cuts of the 1141 Alloy Steel bar as well as longer tool life.
