Another variation of grade 316 is alloy 316H. Though the basic chemistry is the same in most 316 variations, the addition of certain elements or modification of its carbon content creates the said variations. In the case of 316H Steel Cold Finished Bars, the chemical alteration pertains to the inclusion of higher carbon content in its alloy. The main reason for increasing its carbon content is to make the 316H stainless steel round bar resilient to decay, especially if they are involved in applications that have elevated temperatures. By itself, carbon is an element that has excellent hardness and toughness.

Adding carbon to the alloy of 316H stainless steel rods leads to the transference of some degree of these properties. Hence, these components become harder, much tougher, despite being exposed to very high temperatures. Since high carbon-containing products like the 316H stainless steel welding rod are chemically stable, their rate of reaction to various chemicals as well as other elements is at higher temperatures. Thus, the ASTM A479 UNS S31609 hex bar is well suited for use in such instances. Although the higher content of carbon puts the component at a disadvantage because the astm a276 type 316H flat bar will be difficult to weld.

Moreover, the alloy is prone to the formation of carbide precipitation at the grain boundary of the AISI 316H threaded bar. Thus welding them is discouraged simply because they would cause inconvenience to the user. Like grade 310, the SS 316H square bar is a popular alloy for cryogenic applications as well. The properties of grade 304 stainless steel products are significantly lower than JIS SUS 316H black bar. This justifies the economical perspective of using grade 316 instead of 304. All variations of 316 including the ss 316H bright bar are referred to as marine grade steel.
