Grade 416 belongs to the martensitic class of Stainless Steel alloys. This particular grade is a free machining alloy. There are several benefits of using a free machining alloy like 416 stainless steel round bar, despite the cost of machining being valued about 15% to 20% more than conventional practices. For instance, not only does the machining speed increase, but the manufacturer is also able to expect a larger cut of the 416 stainless steel rods.
Moreover, small chips aid in easy machining while also extending the life of these steels. Since ASTM A479 UNS S41600 hex bar belongs to a category of free machining alloys, this particular stainless steel grade could be hardened. The alloy can be effectively hardened by subjecting the astm a276 type 416 flat bar to a heat treatment, which in turn, is an operation that optimizes the elevated strength and hardness properties of the alloy. Due to its reasonable economics and ready machinability, grade JIS SUS 416 black bar is easily used in its highly tempered disposition.
In compared to several conventional austenitic stainless steel grades, this martensitic DIN 1.4005 square bar demonstrates better machining characteristics. This being said, however, its high machining properties would mean that the AISI 416 threaded bar sacrifices an important property like corrosion resistance. Though not as resilient to corrosion as compared to authentic alloys, these grades have moderate resistance to corrosion. High sulfur, free machining stainless steel grades such as ss 416 bright bar tend to be rather unsuitable for applications that involve either marine or any chloride exposure circumstances.
