Grade 446 pertains to the ferritic class of stainless steels. Being a ferritic grade, the ASTM A479 UNS S44600 hex bar is not heat-treatable stainless steel. The benefits of using this alloy are that the metal not only exhibits good resistance to high temperature oxidation, but the 446 stainless steel round bar also demonstrates good resistance to corrosion. Compared to austenitic steels, the corrosion resistance properties of ferritic grades like JIS SUS 446 black bar are much lower. However, this alloy makes up for its lower corrosion resistance properties because the 446 stainless steel welding rod has superior toughness. 

In terms of welding, the ss 446 bright bar is an alloy that is readily welded with the use of the most conventional techniques. Yet, welding the astm a276 type 446 flat bar using oxyacetylene welding is the exception, as most manufacturers do not recommend using this technique. A non-hardenable alloy, the 446 stainless steel rods has excellent resistance to corrosion at elevated temperature settings, without any loss to its superior mechanical properties. A drawback noticed by suppliers in this grade is that the DIN 1.4762 square bar exhibits poor ductility. The reason for this is because of the higher content of chromium. 

Due to the excellent oxidation resistance offered by the AISI 446 threaded bar at elevated temperatures this alloy is fairly regularly used for applications involving furnace parts and boiler baffles.
