A common characteristic shared by grades 304, 321 and 347 is that they have the same basic chemical composition. Which means their alloy including the material for 347 stainless steel round bar consisted of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Yet, it has been noted that the properties for grade 347 and 321 are almost similar. This is on account of the addition of a stabilizing element in their alloy. For instance, the 347 stainless steel rods are stabilized by the addition of niobium to the alloy.

Niobium, when added in austenitic stainless steel grades like astm a276 type 347 flat bar performs the function of stabilizing carbon, especially if the alloy has been exposed to elevated temperatures. Just like titanium increases grade 321’s ability to withstand high temperatures, the addition of niobium results in a more stable ASTM A479 UNS S34700 hex bar that delivers excellent performance under such conditions. This element is also responsible for the strengthening of steels. Because this alloy can withstand high temperature, the welding and forming characteristics of JIS SUS 347 black bar range anywhere between good to excellent.

The impact resistance behaviour of this alloy makes it well suited for use in cryogenic settings. Therefore, the DIN 1.4550 square bar may be used in the production of equipment that is a part of cryogenic environments. Typically carbon steels or alloy steels experience failure under such circumstances unlike the AISI 347 threaded bar, which can make quick connections. Other properties of the ss 347 bright bar include resistance to scaling, resistance to corrosion in aqueous media as well as good phase stability.
