Grade 440C is also referred to by manufacturers and suppliers by its UNS designation alloy S44004. JIS SUS 440C black bar is an alloy that belongs to the martensitic class of stainless steels. The properties of 400 series are also shared by this alloy. Amongst all the 400 stainless steel series, the chemistry of 440C stainless steel round bar is known to have the highest content of carbon. Typically after undergoing a heat treatment procedure, the 440Cc stainless steel welding rod is able to secure a hardness that levels between 58 HRC – 60 HRC. Often, manufacturers treat the alloy 440C to an oil quenching treatment.

Oil quenching the ASTM A479 UNS S44004 hex bar aids in optimising its hardness properties. After heat treatment, not only its hardness but other properties like mechanical strength, and wear resistance of the grade astm a276 type 440C flat bar gets a good boost. A peculiarity of this alloy grade is that once hardened, the AISI 440C threaded bar could hold a sharp edge and combats corrosion. Moreover, it is possible to achieve a near mirror finish, by ordering a procedure as simple as polishing. Compared to austenitic grades, the 440C stainless steel rods are known to exhibit moderate corrosion resistance properties, especially if compared to alloy 304.

Although it is possible to harden this grade of stainless steel through the use of a heat treatment procedure, machining is preferable to practise on the DIN 1.4125 square bar. This is because in an annealed condition it is easy to machine the ss 440C bright bar as it tends to become extremely difficult once the alloy has been hardened.
